How to replace valley single handle shower cartridge?

Question:I have what I think is a replacement cartridge but can't seem to unscrew the ring to allow me to get to the cartridge. Does it unscrew or do I need a special tool for this. All I've tried so far is a wrench/pliers.

Yes the ring should unscew may have some lime deposit making it difficult butt it should go
