How do I extend 2x4's on my enclosed porch vault ceiling so I can ventalate it and insulate it? pls HELP??

Question:I tore down my enclosed porch ceiling and discovered I only have 2x4's on the vault roof of the ceiling. There is not enough space .I need to entend them so I can add venatlation and R19 insulation...Do I sister a more 2x4's together to have enough space to add the installation? Pls pls help? It is getting hot in here without the insulation.

Answers:
Just take a table saw and rip some more 2x4's in half.
Then screw those to the underside of the existing rafters. That will give you an additional 1 5/8", or thereabouts... that should be enough to run the good insulation.

Tip -- determine your average size 2x4... some are 3 1/2 wide, some vary a bit... find your smallest... then rip all halves to that size, and then all your joists will match as good as they do now.
3 to 3 1/2" screws should do the trick of putting the spacers up... use a little construction adhesive on them and they wont be coming apart.

Good Luck

You would be better off just installing R13 3-1/2 inch will still make a big difference.
if you want to extend your ceiling for insulation i would take a 7 inch strip of plywood and nail it to the existing 2x4 rafter then fill in the other 2x4 to make a 7 inch ceiling. with r19 insukation a 2x6 wall is suffice so you will have an inch and one half for ventilation.
