Can you put shellac on a newly painted wall?
Question:I used paper sticker to decorate my nursery, now i'd like the paper to stick securely to my wall without worrying that it might fall off later...i was told that i can't put plastic varnish over it...so i'm wondering if shellac would do the job, or is there any other stuff i could paint over it to make it glossy and stick securely...

If normal wallpaper paste is not holding your stickers on securely then my suggestion would be to use a water based Varathane. If you are just doing the stickers - mask off the area where the stickers are and you can purchase the Varathane in spray bottles - then slightly spray a few coats (letting it dry between coats). Careful not to spray heavy as to avoid drips. You can also brush on with a high quality brush made for use with water based Varathanes. Varathane is available in a Satin, Semi-Gloss or Gloss finish.
Now this being said....If at a later date you decide that you want to change the decor of the bedroom you will need to remove or prime over the stickers (if they are not thick and bumpy). To remove them with the Varathane finish you will need a stripper (gel ones work well on verticle surfaces) - or sanding off the varathane finish - then the sticker.
If the sticker is very thin and wouldn't be noticed really under a new paint job you can prime over the wall with BIN Primer made by Zinsser. It is a shellac based primer - it will stick to anything and then you can proceed with either latex or oil paint on top (most likely latex is what you would choose).
Hope this has helped
Shellac is a No No! You would never get it off of your walls when you want to change the decor when the child gets to be complaining about how awful the room looks.
Shellac is not clear and it is for wood.
get yourself an aerosol spray can of Krylons "crystal clear coating" and spray your paper stickers or get a can of minwax "poly acrylic" water-based urethane none of these products will yellow over time, Good luck Les the painter
