How can I recycle wood??
Question:I need to do this for a big project. How can i recycle wood at home without having to take it to a factory?
Answers:
You don't say what your application will be, nor do you tell us what type and how much wood you are dealing with, but in general, here are some thoughts:
If it is cut lumber, and in decent shape, save it, remove the nails, etc., and offer it for sale as used lumber.
If it is not reuseable as lumber, the best bet is to run it through a chipper and use the result as mulch, or sell it off as mulch. A chipper may be rented pretty cheaply. You may need to reduce the wood to a size that the chipper can handle.
Lastly, call a local recycler. Describe what you have, and see if they might be interested.
Good luck.
Well you can't! The city won't let you burn it, the union won't let you chip it, and your neighbors won't let you stack it to use as a fence.
Rent a wood grinder at Home Depot or Lowes and turn you wood into a landscaping product. People all around the country use wood chips for gardens, play ground, and as way to prevent weeds from growing in you flower beds.
Depends on the type of wood, most will probably decay over time, but it's not the most effective way. You can bring it to places where they recycle it which would go faster.
burn it and make heat!
d
you turn it into mulch. its the outdoor answer to paneling and linoleum.
You can buy a Planer and run all the wood thru it and it will be like new. Plan on $400. for a benchtop planer.
No doubt you've heard the saying, "One man's trash, is another man's treasure."
Well, it's true. When I have leftover scraps from home renovations, I leave them on my lawn by the street. I put a cardboard sign that says "FREE" on the pile. Sure enough, someone comes, in the still of the night, and picks it up. What someone wants with 6 shingles is beyond me?
If you put the stuff out and no one takes it, at least it's in an easy spot to load up and take to the dump.
Purchase or rent a sander take off the varnish or whatever is on the most outer portion and re-utilize it around your home i.e. patio table, tree fort, planter,or handicap ramp for elderly neighbor. You can also take the pieces (as long as they are not treated with chemicals) and leave them in the woods. There are may insects and the like that can use them as a home or food source. Just spread them out over an area and walk away.
While all of the other answers here are stimulating, mine may be more practical. Call around to your local cabinet shops, most recycle their wood, and would probably have no problem with you putting your wood in their recycle bins. From the bins they usually go back to a mill where they are ground up for particle board or MDF. This is the most environmentally friendly and the most economical.
