How do you cut a circle through a granite tile?
Question:I have a 24 inch granite tile and i need to drop in a round stainless steel sink on top of it. The sink is about 16 inch of diameter. What tool and how do you cut through granite?
Answers:
You can use a small makita grinder with a four inch diamond blade.Bosch diamond blades run about 27.00 at the home depot and work wet or dry.Use a black permanent marker or grease pencil and the sink cut out to mark the cut.Go slow and work your way around before cutting all the way through. The sink rim will hide any imperfections in your cut unless you run outside the line to far.
Take it to a marble/granite/stone workers yard, it is a delicate job and the drill is specialised and has to be cooled as it cuts! You will break the tile trying this yourself!
If you have a wet saw with a relatively new diamond blade - I would try cutting the tile by adjusting the blade depth (I.e starting in the center of the tile and cutting a star * pattern). Since most sinks have a flange - your cut does not have to be perfect - it will just take some time. Another option would be to cut multiple holes with a wet diamond hole saw and a drill press. In either case finish off any imperfections with a diamond grinding wheel and polishing bit. It is not really a diy type of job - but if you have the right equipment it is possible.
good luck.
