Sanding techniques?

Question:I am stripping the kitchen cabinets to repaint.....and so far I have started sanding with 80 grain on an orbital sander then went to 120 grain then to 240 grain, now am I supposed to sand with the grain or against it? any other tips?

Answers:
With an orbital sander your have no control. I don't think you need to use anything finer than 120G for painting, as any finer may be too smooth for a good key.
If you are going to hand finish sanding go with the grain.

If you are using an orbital sander, it doesn't make any difference since the disc is moving in a circular motion. If you were using a palm sander or hand-sanding, then you would have to sand with the grain.

If you are down to 240 grit sandpaper, you are ready to start finishing. You could go down to 320 grit, but I usually only use 320 for between coats of polyurethane.

I hope that this helps you out.
120 or 150 is fine enough to paint over. No need to hand sand as paint is very forgiving. Prime with a quality primer and use 100% acrylic paint. Might want to put a tough finish on top such as a clear oil based polyurethane to resist scratches.
hand sand with the grain...
