Which material works the best as a sound sealent / insulation?
Question:We've added two more rooms to our house and the main walls are standing, you can see the bricks itself. And I'd like to give it a sound insulation material, because I'm a drummer and I'd like to drum in my room :)
Do You know any suggestions, what kind of material would be the best to choose?
...and also, it shouldn't be too expensive! Maybe around $1000 for the whole room, or for the critical places. (the room is 22 square meters big)
Answers:
Lowes carries a Styrofoam insulating 4"x8" sheet that runs about 8bucks each. NOT sound proof but it will help.
A step up from that, Ductboard from your local A?C supply house runs about 50 a sheet, they are fiberglass faced with foil- foil would go towards the wall.
A step up from that, acoustic panels are about 200+ each.
I once knew a drummer that covered his entire basement ceiling with Egg crate material from the commercial cases of eggs. They are pressed fiber about 14"x14" square. He actually had 2 layers deep on his ceiling and the acoustics were awesome.
If you know someone that works in a Hotel or Large restaurant, you might be able to get enough. When painted, they look pretty cool too!
Contractor who is also a musician says:
Either practice pads
or ALL of the below:
No Windows
Extra Heavy Sound-proof capable (studio quality door) as the only opening in the room
Lay down Concrete floor with a riser floor above it that is dampened
1 inch thick gypsum board on walls and ceilings covered with foam padding designed to dampen and silence
and then about 100 other things that "would've had to have been planned PRIOR TO BUILDING THE ROOM"
