How do you make a compost bin? What can you put in it?
Question:I want to make a compost bin, instead of wasting food that can be turned into good soil.
Another thing is what foods can go in it. i know that you can't put bread in, but what isn't ok to put in, and what is?
Answers:
You can build one out a lumber quite easily; just pound a few stakes into the ground in the shape of a square (4' X 4' should be sufficient enough) and use 1 x 4 inch slats with about a 1/2 inch spacing between the slats. If you don't want to go through the trouble of building one, you can purchase plastic composters from most hardware outlets.
As for materials which can be composted, most biodegradable household waste can be composted. However, the are certain materials that shouldn't be put in a composter.
No meat.
No animal or fish by-products.
No feces (animal or otherwise).
No oils or fats.
No sawdust.
No bread products.
No flour.
However, coffee filters and bio-degradable paper products can be composted. I've heard of some gardening enthusiasts even putting in hair clippings to increase the nitrogen (?) content of their compost.
Red worms, some dirt, and ripped up newspaper. You can basically put anything but meat in there. But dont overwhelm the worms. Red worms do best. Add some earth worms to balance everything out. Make sure to keep them moist but not wet. Do not let them dry up. Also turn the bed often so the worms can eat everything and so it doesnt smell. Cedar shaving will also help. It is all a matter of trial and error
untreated pine made in to a square and mesh over the top to keep in the moisture
things that can go in it;
newspaper
grass
food scrap
twigs
prunings
worms
soil
not too put in:
onions
lemons citrus friut
chillies
or you can ask your local nursery
