How can I move a very heavy, old safe from a small space? It had to get there some way! Or how to find combo
Question:The safe is in a private home. It is of interest to family regarding content after elder's pasing.
Answers:
What you really need is a locksmith. The safe may have been placed on site, and th house framed around it. I've seen it before, but usually in banks, and jewelery stores.
It sounds to me as though the only interest is in the contents, and I don't see how moving it will accomplish that goal. Call a locksmith; He will point you in the right direction, and recommend someone who specializes in safe cracking.
I moved plenty of large heavy things by using wood boards or cardboard (depending on items weight) to slip under and then slide on - perhaps this may help :)
if it don't have wheels you will have to raise it and put a skid under it with wheels like a heavy duty floor dolly I had a old safe that was outside It was not very often that I moved it I had to use my tractor I would guess it weighed in the area of 1,500 to 2,000 pounds
Good Luck
how can we be sure its not a stolen safe we are talking about.
Make a fulcrum and lift the front. Put several 1 inch metal pipes cut to fit under it. Tie a rope or cable to it {close to the bottom} and pull. I have moved 1000 lb objects this way. A stethoscope will find the combo. Start at 0, turn left until you hear a tumbler fall. Then right, then left, then back to 0 and open. Takes some practice, but can be done.
I think Don has the right idea. Why go through the trouble of moving it if the contents are the only interest? Call a reputable locksmith and save your backbone the pain.
