How do you fit a 1/2" bayonet gas fitting to a standard 1/2" copper supply pipe?
Question:The bayonet (elbow) fitting is not a normal 1/2" copper connection inasmuch that, whilst it takes a standard 1/2" compression nut, the standard 1/2" copper pipe will not fit into it's end.
Answers:
I believe you are allowed to disconnect proprietory fittings of your own appliances. Are you supposed to pay a corgi engineer to install and uninstall a gas cooker every time you want to clean behind your cooker?
It sounds to me like you have the old style bayonet pipe to either a pipe without the correct female fitting (they have changed to a crappy screw fit). Or alternatively the connection has been removed and the supply shud have a blank on the end.

These guys sell what you need.
The answer, if you live in the U.K.,Percy, is YOU DON'T, as it's against the law to fit gas connections unless you are CORGI registered!
This may sound a naff answer but please don't mess with gas fittings yourself get a Corgi registered person to do the work
1/2 copper supply gas pipe?? are you sure?? not black steel pipe?If you are not sure , when it gets to gas call a plumber
If you're in the US, you can't use copper for a gas line. Use "black pipe" for gas.
Bayonet fittings are normally for LP BBQ's. Rethink your project. Are you converting to natural gas?
With a cigarette and a blow torch.
DISREGARD THAT LAST SENTENCE...
Your talking about making or changing permanent connecting fittings and the answer is you don't, unless you Corgi registered. Even with Corgi register you liable for the work, but without a fine and if anything goes wrong.
To put change to gas pipework and fittings requires testing for leaks and purging of all appliances, all off which are important and dangerous and illegal if un-trained, or more important not Corgi registered
are you putting an olive on the compression nut as long as you make sure gas isnt leaking use soapy water you dont need a corgi they are just overpaid parasites
Take your bayonet fitting to the plumbers merchant and they will supply you with a reducer to fit your 1/2" or 15 mm copper pipe .
