What type of hinge is this?
Question:I'm making something a bit similar to this and I was wondering what type of hinge they used as I need to consider safety issues for children (so the lid doesn't drop and squash the child's fingers). If you don't know what this one is, do you know of any hinges that will either slowly drop the lid down or something like that concept that would be safe?

known as a secure hold hinge u can use a pnuematic gas filled hinge or an adjustable self closing hinge 5-47 dollars best bet to locate a retailer is your local hardware/woodworker store ---depot is doubtful to carry these specialty hinges most will come with installation instructions and can be done easily with a screwdriver or drill good luck
Hydraulic hinge maybe? Not sure, but that would slowly drop.
On a toy chest I built last year I used automotive style hydraulic lifts (purchased at Pep Boys). They worked great but did require a long time to adjust them so as not to squash little fingers.
It is a safety hinge, the only other thing is like already mentioned, hydralic hinge, Lowe's or Home Depot should have both. For safety, I used to take the lid off the toy box for my children till they were older.
I found it on Yahoo. I entered (toy box hinge). Found the exact thing you need at hardwaresource.com . Good luck
Locking hinge.
its called a lid support hinge, try http://www.rockler.com
There are a few different styles of toy box hinges and supports that you can purchase to keep kids from injuring themselves. I like shopping at Woodcraft for that sort of thing, but Rockler is also good.
