My toilet does not have a strong flush, what can I do?

Question:The water pressure is just not really there. My child may poo and it will take two flushes to get it down and sometimes it may not stay down. How can I fix this problem ?

Answers:
Replace the toilet.
The ceramic (porcelain) part of your toilet can wear out. Without pictures and a long explanation of how toilets work, it would be difficult to explain why. I've been through this many times with friends and family. They never believe me. They think that the porcelain stays the same forever and that it must be water pressure, a bad ballcock, or something in the drain.

If the tank is filling in a normal time period, it's not the water pressure or the ballcock.

If the water is exiting the tank completely without the flapper sticking, it's not the flapper.

If the water is exiting the toilet and not backing up, through the bowl or around the base, it's not the drain.

Eventually, I convince people to replace the whole toilet and everything works fine. It's easy to do and only costs about $100 for a low end toilet. Until you get around to doing this, try dumping a pitcher of water into the toilet as you flush (as the water kind of forms the hollow cone). This should help to at least empty the bowl.

check the chain or wait a day
Try this before you buy a new toilet. Look in the toilet bowl. There is a hole near the lower front of of the bowl. This is where the actual flushing (spinning like a small whirlpool) water comes from. The water that runs down the inside of the bowl during a flush is mostly for cleaning. If you have hard water that hole will build up with deposits and you won't get the volume of water you need for a strong rapid flush. Clean out the calcium deposit with a stiff wire bent into an L.
