How do you fix the float in the toilet tank?

Question:We just moved into a brand new house and one of our toilets keeps running after it's been flushed. I think the problem is with the float because the flapper works fine and if you just bump the float a little bit after the tank fills the toilet stops running. Does the float need to be adjusted and how do you do it?

Answers:
Yeah, it sounds like the float is too high. If it is the two piece tower style, you can twist the top section clockwise which lowers the float. Or, if it's an old style ball, just bend the rod downwards a lttle.

Yes this is called a ballcock and it is ajustable...you can scew it to ajust or bend it also, you might want to check the flap...even tho it might seem to work,it might be getting stuck or the chain might be to long and getting stuck under the flap.
Good luck to ya.
It could be that the float needs adjustment but if that doesn't work, you might end up having to replace the entire assembly (sometimes a little grease will fix it short term). If you're handy, then you can pick up the replacement part at the hardware store. Turn off the water, mark the water height in the tank, drain the tank and remove the old ball and float and install the new one. A lot of the new ones don't have a float ball anymore, they have a float that's part of the device.

If you're not handy, get someone who is. The dangerous part about a toilet tank is that the water valve is always open, a mistake can literally flood your entire house.

Another idea if its a brand new house is to see if the builder will fix it.
Call the builder or have your real estate agent call him. It's covered under the warranty for min. 1 year. Try to wait at least one month of living there to figure out any other little fixes. Make a list for him.
Just go to Lowes and buy a new guts for the tank
If by bumping the float works, it would seem to me that something is stopping the float from rising, could be rubbing on the tank sides or another obstruction, flush the tank and observe the point where it stops and see if the is any thing in it's way
A new ball cok will run you about 10 bucks and its easy to replace. Also make sure you turn the angle stop valve off before you begin anything.
