I want to paint my acoustic guitar. What type of paint should i use?
Question:I have a black acoustic guitar with a flat paint, not the glossy/shiny type.
Answers:
Personally I would use a aerosol spray lacquer. This is going to give you the durability you need with the minimum of paint film thickness. The only problrm you have is that as your guitar is already black it may take a couple of coats.
As previous answerers have said painting it is going to change the tone of your guitar but a mate of mine painted his and covered it with stickers from wherever they played and he felt it improved the tone as it gave it a flatter sound.
I have to admit I know nothing about acoustic guitars though !!
If you wish to paint a design, I would go with high quality acrylics.
Japlac.
Lacquers are generally the safest to use for resonant wooden instruments, but you still run the risk of changing the tone of the instrument--if that matters to you.
You should know that the surface of the guitar is called the soundboard, this is what causes the sound to resonate, so by painting it you will change the tone completely, so if it is a crap guitar and you just want it to look cool, it probably won't matter what paint you use.
DONT!!
Are you mad ??
You'll seriously screw up the sound !
Before you paint it which as a number of people have told you affects the sound test a small sample on the back where it will not be seen. If it's a lacquer originally then the new paint may cause the old to blister and peel. In this case you would have to carefully sand the whole thing down and start from scratch. Another easier alternative is to use a guitar sticker, look at this link www.stickergiant.com/page/sg/P...
We have customised two Fender Strats with these. Hope this helps.
NEVER paint an acoustic guitar yourself unless it is just to hang on a wall. You will destroy the sound.
