Where can you buy melamine laminate particleboard?
Question:I'm looking to buy a large sheet of wood to cut into pieces and create a very simple piece of furniture for myself. But I don't know where to buy particleboard that is laminated (like a standard Ikea desk). When I lived in the UK I easily found it at B & Q. But the equivalent Home Depot in the USA doesn't sell it and the employee seemed clueless about the whole concept. They just sell bare wood. No particleboard (laminated or unlaminated).
Please help.
Answers:
Many lumberyards carry white laminated shelving boards, which are particle board covered with melamine. Only 12" or 16" wide, but if that will work for you it might be worth looking for. Larger sheets never really made it into the mainstream supply chain in the US. Wholesalers that supply cabinet shops do have the larger sheets. You will either need to find one of them or perhaps a custom cabinet shop in your area.
Seeing other responses, I suspect that the availability varies by market area. I am certain the big boxes here do not keep it, but it is possible they do in other areas. If you had a clueless employee, it certainly would be worth another call to them as the other channels to get it can be quite a pain.
I don't know why the associate didn't know about the melamine, Home Depot sells 4x8 sheets of 3/4" white melamine boards. Also sells 3/4" planks for shelving. I would assume the competition, such as Lowes or Menards would carry the same stuff.
actually depot does sell it,you got a bad employee i would say,if you build something out of this stuff you'll need the iron on edge tape too or all your exposed edges will look nasty, anytime you go to depot or lowes make sure you ask more than one person if you're not satisfied, also, there should be professional building suppliers around in the phone book who will even deliver it for you
