Sanding question for plywood?
Question:i am making a little bar kind of deal and i am facing/backing the bar with plywood i've salvaged from a recent remodel project. my question was, what grit of sand paper would be good for sanding down the plywood? and...is it okay to sand it if i've already put on 2 coats primer and 2 coats normal white paint. or will it just make it more difficult since there are more layers?
any help would be useful. thanks!

if you want bare wood, buy new, If you want it nice you should start with furniture grade plywood
if you want to paint over, sand with 220 grit, prime and paint . If you want to take out some really rough areas 80 grit 1st.
it's gonna suck, too much to sand, you'll just load up the paper with paint and won't get anywhere, you could strip it with stripper, best advice, repaint if you're painting, buy new if you're staining, absolutely don't waste your time sanding though
Bangnails is very right, sanding is a waste of time.
well why would you sand if you've already painted it? if you want to paint it a different color just sand lightly to rough up the surface. use a medium grit sand paper. then reapply the primer and paint.
if you're dead set on sanding down to bare wood then use a chemical stripper or big electric sander like a belt sander or plane sander. you'll still go through a lot of sand paper with all that paint on there.
Scrap the idea.
Sanding as above...
Chemi stripper will lift all the grain out the top ply. It'll look really bad.
You can sand it lightly with 240, sure sanding a painted surface will clog up the paper after a bit, but it will smooth down the surface and eliminate any roughness and bumps before you apply the final coat.
If you want to sand to remove the paint, use something like coarse 80 grit, it won;t clog anywhere near as fast, but you will need to dress the surface up with 240 afterwards to smooth the surface.
It's normal to sand between coats because it leaves a smoother finish.
It's plywood, buy a new piece you cheap bastard. hehehe
some good advice above, just a thought, what does the back side of the ply look like, just thought it might be unfinished, so just flip it over and use the back side.
just a thought.
220 with orbital hand sander
