How do i renovate a wooden floor?
Question:Rather than laying carpets, I wood like to use the floor boards that are already there. Can anyone give me a step by step guide?
Answers:
Sand floor then clean free of dust/dirt.
Next put the stain/varnish according to mfg directions.
It is VERY important to put at least 3 coats of clear coat/ polyurethane to finish. Being a high traffic area you don't want product to wear off.
I've also read to maintain by reapplying the polyurethane every 2 or so years.

If you are going to do this yourself, you will need to hire an electric floor sander. When you have done this make sure all the floor is clean, then stain the floor or varnish it. job done
Unless you have ever used a floor sander you should hire this done or you will be very unhappy when you turn the sander on and you end up with a wavy floor, you can just hire the sanding part and finish the floor yourself.
Firstly go over the whole floor with a wallpaper scraper and remove all debris and check for protruding nails. These will cause havoc if left before sanding.Hammer them down, using a nail punch. Then hire a floor sander and a edge sander. Set the sander to its "thinnest" setting and go against the grain. then adjust to a deeper setting and Follow the grain. Do the edges next then go over the whole floor again with the grain. Complete. Now really clean the floor and remove all dust etc.
You can now buy excellent kits to varnish your wood floor. I believe there's even one that works just like mopping the floor.
Take your time and you will be really pleased with the results.
OH, if you have any gaps use wood glue mixed with the sawdust you collect and fill with that to get same colour..

First of all check out the Q and A for joe fridays grrl, not far above your Q.
Without knowing the substance of the flooring, or it's current condition, I'd suggest, as I did to her, a good cleaning buffing first. Certainly SANDING always seems to be the immediate answer, and in many cases very valid.
It's also messy and tedious, and if the house is furnished all that has to be moved out. It's also a job best done by professionals.

i did this myself 5 years ago...
remove everything from the room.
sand around the edge with an orbital sander and then hire a floor board sander ..( get lots more paper than you need, trust me).
its a mesy job but looks the mutts nutts after.
get an industrial sander and re sand the entire floor and revarnish or use bourneseal.
