Do you have to have a beck section fitted when fitting a hearth?

Your question isn't very explicit but, here goes! :-) You don't always have to have a back section as in a conventional fireplace. If, for instance you have a large square opening and are wanting to use "dogs & grate" as I did in my old cottage, brickwork/hearth alone was sufficient. The actual grate though was not touching any surrounding surface, several inches away from sides/back, all round. ( I fitted a log burner in the end, much, MUCH, more efficient :-)

The option is entirely your own decision, but if you don't have one, don't attempt to light a fire.
Could you be a bit more specific than back section. Do you mean the back that's recessed into the wall and joins the flue?
