Yep - I stand corrected. I said dado, but rabbet is right. Been a long time since woodworking in high school!
It's a rabbet joint, a dado is a groove with wood on each side, while a rabbet is right at the edge of a board with one side open.

It's hard to say exactly without a picture from the side to see how the wood was cut, but to me it looks like a modified half-lap joint. (each piece of wood cut 1/2 way depth-wise)

If both pieces are full thickness then it's really just a butt joint.
