How to switch around appliances with gas lines?
Question:We want to remodel our kitchen the kitchen is somewhat small and the positions for the appliances are awkwardly positioned we want to move the gas stove across the room where the refridgerator is (so we can install a dishwasher next to the sink) The stove NOW sits besides the sink. I know to turn off the gas before moving but how do you MOVE THE GAS LINE ACROSS or under the floor ... What steps and materials needed and what kinda piping, clamps...We would like to try to do it ourselves because a contractor is sooo not in our budget right now. Any advise would be much appreciated thanks in advance!!!
Answers:
By law only a certified construction contractor can relocate a gas line, and it needs to be re-certified by the code enforcement agency where you live. Fear of death by explosion should impel you to make the right decisions here!
We ran into this at our restaurant. Go to a plumbing supply store and ask them to show you the "flexable gas line" This stuff is tough enough to move where you need it. Check with the local government about certain codes to hiding gas lines in the floor.usually not recommended becuase of further remodeling.
Good Luck
It can be done with black steel pipe but each length must be cut to length and threaded with fittings attached that do not leak. Easier, but more expensive to buy material, is CSST. Corrugated Stainless Steel Tubing. This flexible pipe requires proprietary fittings but just one one each end. Go to a supplier of gas piping, e.g. plumbing supply, and see if they will sell it to a non-licensed plumber. Some do, some don't. Rigid black can be purchased, cut and threaded at your local home center. Must test when ready with soap bubbles to ensure no leaks.
You are better off finding some $$$$ and have the work done professionally by a certified, licensed installer.
You are playing with the lives of your family. Gas lines are not DIY projects for the average homeowner.
Ask the plumber or HVAC company that does the work if they have any payment plans. If not go to the bank or someplace and take out a small loan.
