What are the rules for running a gas line to pool heater if I want to have the line exposed?

Question:Length from gas meter to pool heater is 120 feet.

Answers:
size=1.5" normally for standard size pool heaters, above ground must be painted, below yellow PEX or coated black iron

Call your county/city inspector or a qualified plumber or maybe even the gas company and find out what is req'd by code.
you can have black pipe exposed
Under UPC code, it has to be scotchkote pipe.
It is no longer legal to run black pipe exposed unless it is at least 6" above ground/dirt level.

If you are running it across concrete or such, then it can be black.

Scotchkote, and other brand likes, is plastic coated black iron pipe. The fittings will have to be wrapped with 'gas wrap tape'.

Scotchkote costs about 3 times what black iron costs, so get ready financially.

The city will probably require a permit and licensed gas fitter to install it.
Check with your local inspector first. Having 120 ft of gas line exposed is not a good idea.
