Hooking a 220 dryer to two 110 power lines?
Question:I bought a new house and I have a 220 dryer unfortunatley the people before used gas and there is no 220 outlet however there are two 110 lines that I could hook it to is that possible and if so how would I wire it?
Answers:
You are speaking primarily of the way a 220 line used to be hooked up. Today though, they have the actual breaker for a 220 line dryer / water heater.
In the panel box you will hook the white and the black to the breaker to make the 220. But you need to have an electrician do this if you have not done this type of work in your past. You do not learn on potentially dangerous lines - your lesson could be a major fire or serious injury to someone. You may even get sued if a fire did result from your work and spread to a neighbor's home.
If you are compelled to connect this yourself then make sure you install the regular breaker for the 220 line.
Remember both black and white each carry 110V, so both connect to the breaker. You will have to be sure it is a four wire covered by insulation type wire which should be about 14 guage. You'll have a neutral and a ground for today's code.
Personally, if you have not ran a 220 outlet before this is "Not" the time to practice ...it is a time to back up and have an electrician come in and do it.. what $70.00 for about 20 minutes work. But you can assure yourself it is safely done.
Put it this way also...if you do not hook it up correctly as soon as you turn the dryer on you could fry the dryer, injure the person operating it and cause major damage to the panel box . this could result in a fire or serious replacement work throughout your home. That $70 or so could very well turn into a few hundred dollars just to restore the power to where it is right now, then you'd still have to have the electrician come in to connect the dryer anyway. Be smart ...do not do it.
STOP! Don't try to do this yourself. You need to hire an electrician before you hurt yourself or burn down your new house.
i am sorry but I can tell buy your question that you do not need to be doing this youself. save your life and hire a pro. Good Luck.
you must be in USA, in USA they use a six phase system
if your 2 phases are the opposed pair then you can possibly bridge them
this is not a DIY job, because of switching and earthing issues
DON'T even think about doing it yourself
Hire an electrician...If you are asking this question, you are indicating that you don't have an understanding of what needs to be done! This is not a DIY job!
FIRST you must make sure that you have the proper breaker for this. Then that you have sufficient wiring and the right type of outlet (Electrical code compliance)
Get the cost estimated then go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a new gas dryer for about $350-400 as the cost of the job may be more than a new dryer.
THEN place an ad in the paper selling your electric dryer which you may be able to sell for $100-150..
End cost of a new dryer $250 -300
yes it is possible but don't try it. get a licensed. electrician to do it. you are not knowledgeable enough to do it yourself.
No. No. NO! It is going to be cheaper to buy a gas dryer.
buy a home electrical book at home depot or lowe's and do it yourself,it will show you everythig you need to know on how to hook up a 220 circuit it's not a big deal, just make sure the main circuit breaker turned off, the whole installation will take less than an hour
NO,the best thing is to use a step-down transformer(220 to 110).
The idiots before you were too cheap to do it right and you are continuing endangering your family too. If you don't know, hire a professional.
