Whats the correct size of river rock to use on an access to a driveway?
Question:diameter of rock (approx)
Answers:
3/4 crushed rock is the best choice; it stays put, and drains well. River rock moves under load and makes deep ruts and gives poor traction.
I have no idea where you are--here in the West I used to buy what they called road mix, it was a combo of clay sand and gravel and compacted once it was watered down after leveling. I purchased by the 10yd load, prices are different depending on where you are and what is available.
1" is the the largest I would use. Anything larger than that, you tend to dig your tires into creating ruts. There is a product that the road departments used called DGA (dense graded aggregate), also called QP (quarry processed) that has both stones and fines that will compact quite well.
