Making wood darker?

Question:I want to make all of the living room furniture darker. How can I do that?

Answers:
if it's fabric, you could let my sisters kids play on it ,,
if it's wood you should give more information. You should be able to use some sort of stain, but really should give more info to get best answer.

stain it
if its all wood, you can just a certain stain to it and it will appear darker.just be careful with the stain, it isn't good if it gets on fabrics.
Either refinish it and stain it with a dark stain or paint it.
get a mahogany stain and a rag and apply it to the wood but before you do this sand the wood lightly.
You can't get a good answer unless you tell us what's on it now. Solid wood? Wood veneer? Is it finished with lacquer, paint, stain, oil, varnish, polyurethane, what? You can't just apply stain on wood without stripping it first. How you go about stripping it will depend on what's on it, etc.
See if you can get a polyurethane with a dark tint. A few coats should be able to darken the current finish a little. Oerwise, you can simply paint it, or strip the old polyurethane off and stain the wood - but remember to put more polyurethane on again afterwards! This can be a big job, but it will always give the best results. And if you're going to strip the furniture, make sure that it's solid wood first. If it's just a this veneer, you could strip all the way through, leaving the fiberboard inside showing. Not pretty! And a laminate (melamine) finish can't be stripped or stained at all - it's just a plastic film coloured to look like woodgrain.

Good luck!
If I just want to try a slightly darker stain, try buying Old English dark polish and scuff cover. Rub it on and it will darken according to how long you leave it on. You can rub it on then off quickly, or on and let it dry to a darker color. Cheap and easy. A little goes a long way, too.
put stains every where and polish it will be great looking
Hello
You should give additional details on what kind of furniture you have what kind of wood ist, is it raw right now, or does it have a finish on it becuase your talking about different needed processes.

If the furniture is not fine wood and or fine furniture which i think its not because your talking about doing something to it.

If it is unfinished, meaning no shiny finish to it you like pine, then you simply aplly stain evenly with a brush with consistenten long stroke, allow it to dry an appropriate time then apply varnish or shellac

If it has a finish you u can apply a liquid stripper, that will dissolve that, allow it to get gummy the scrape it off, the hand sand and use a sander to sand your piece
then do the process just stated.
agin if its furniture that is contemporary, and you just want to have darker furniture and you dont care too much if its not perfect, you may try some faux finishing effects on a sample board to practice the effect and see if you like it, because there are some special effect that look like stone, marble and even wood.

The prep would be lightly sanding your surface so the paint will have something to stick too, versus a stripping and a sanding and a varnishing job

With the first method you have a lot more work involved,..as if you just must darken the furniture, Painting is the route I would go
You can get some helpful information guiding depending on if you have new unfinished furniture or old etc.../
at http://www.artsparx.com/paintingfurnitur...
Make sure you do all this in a well ventilated space wearing breathing protection and eyeprotection as well as those paper over alls to protect you from wearing all the dust and or paint
Unless you really want to be a do it yourselfer pay someone or buy new furniture lol
Add a few grains of stain in touch wood and paint it
If the furnature that you are trying to change does not have any finish on it then yes...like all of the other smart alecs said "STAIN IT",...but if it already has been finished the only product that will penetrate the old finish is a product called "gel stain" Gel stains are made specifically for doing just what you are talking about, which is making the prefinished wood that you already have darker.
THE BEST WAY IS TO STRIP OFF THE OLD FINISH AND RE-STAIN AND EITHER POLY-URETHANE OR VARNISH IT AGAIN...BUT, THERE ARE SOME GOOD VARNISH STAINS OUT THERE THAT CAN GO RIGHT OVER THE OLD FINISH..THEY WORK BEST IF YOU ARE GOING FROM LIGHTER TO DARKER..ONE THING TO REMEMBER IS THAT, THE MORE COATS YOU APPLY, THE DARKER IT WILL GET.EVENTUALLY IT WILL BEGIN TO LOOK LIKE YOU PAINTED IT..
Not enough information. But, if solid wood, sand it slightly and re-stain it with the darker stain that you have selected. You don't have to strip it to the pure wood, but it depends on the wood.
If it's wood items then stain the items. Why do you want things darker? I just made all my furniture lighter cause dark was too gloomy! I used a bit of bleach to make items lighter.
To make things darker maybe you can find a color enhancer at Color Your World or some other paint & accessories store!
You could use a darker color stain such as Minwax, found at home depot or lowes or other such store that sell paint and finishes. They will be helpful in the steps to take. You can match it up with their many color samples. good luck bettyk
material needed:1,safety equipment(rubber gloves,safety glass,dust mask)
2.paint remover
3.sand paper(smooth)
4.stain or varnish
5.paint brush
1.If it is painted, apply the paint remover to the wood furniture until the natural color comes out.(wear the safety glass, gloves and mask).
2.By using the sandpaper, try to smoothen the surface of the wood,so that the stain/varnish can be easily to apply and can be equally layered into the wood/furniture.
You can find a variety of color of stains or varnish on every paint store/supplier,so you can choose whatever you want.
It may be difucult but you can sand it all down and then stain it a dark stain. If you go to home depot they (most of the time) will be happy to show you what you need to do it! bring them pictures it just helps!
