A Carpender chisel is used to chisel out insets for things like butt hinges, door hinges, cbinet hinges. To remove uneven areas on wood, planes are than used. And there are a gazillion different types plans. I love to work with both tools. Bye
There are different types of wood chisels, with different uses. A bench chisel is a longer type, made to be hit with only a wooden mallet and is used primarily in jointing. It has a straight blade. A butt chisel is shorter usually with a metal end so it can be hit with a hammer or mallet. It has the same purpose, making round holes square, removing material in tight spaces, etc. and has a straight blade. A third type is the carving chisel. It comes in various shapes, called profiles, and is meant to be used by hand although can be struck by a round wooden mallet when needed to remove hard wood.
When you need to put hinges up for a door, they need to be counter sunk (made smooth and level with the door.) Once you have drawn around the hinge with a pen or pencil, you then use the chisel to peck down along the outline the thickness of the hinge. With the curved side down peck lightly inside of where the hinge is going to be placed. The thickness that is taken out should only be the thickness of the hinges.
The other use of the chisel is to counter sink the metal piece that goes around the door latch. Use the same method described above. Anytime you put metal hardware on a wooden frame that needs to be closed, a wood chisel is used to prepair the wood to fit it properly.
