Masonite board: Are there different kinds and qualities?

Question:The kind I find in the lumber store is kind of papery and soft. I recall from years ago that it was brittle, and the edges cut very clean. Not powdery or mushy, but hard. You couldn't poke an auger through it. Where can I get something like this? My application is 2 x 4 feet shims for a pottery slab roller. Maybe what I am looking for goes by another name.

Answers:
Try looking for cement board like a ceramic tile backer board. This is very solid and will resist water unlike masonite.

There is tempered and untempered masonite. The material you remember is was probably tempered. It has a harder, smooth finish.
