FloorBored DIY - SandPaper?
Question:I know this will sounds stupid but can you do floorboreds with just sand paper? Obviously working down the 'grades' from course to fine.
Folks want to move, and the carpets are still here from the old ocupants. Which just look a mess. Ive hardly any money and need to do this as cheap as poss, to make it look half decents instead of this hunk of junk carpet.
Is it do-able? I know it will take time and alot of hard graft but that isnt a problem.
Please advice.

Louise, I admire your determination and willingness to work at it, however it is not a viable proposition. The sandpaper you would need is called aluminium oxide, It is very tough and if you keep shaking, or slapping it, to prevent clogging, you may be able to do it, eventually. If the surface is not too bad start with 240 grade, if its really rough and heavily scratched you may need 120 or 80 grit grade. The sandpaper is graded by numbers the lower the number, the coarser the sandpaper. You will need to wrap the sandpaper around some sort of block to use it properly, you will also need a pair of heavy duty gloves, otherwise you will sand the skin off your hands, very nasty!. I would advise you to cut your costs and at least hire a floor sander. Even with the your willingness to have a go, remember, the road to ruin is paved with the best of intentions. Whatever you choose to do, can only wish you good luck and success. Re post if you manage to do the floor, I'm sure others would like to know if you were successful
yes but it will take ages, buy a cheap sander or borrow one
Louise, you will end up questioning God if you try to strip these floors by hand with sandpaper. Honestly, it is VOLUMES of work, so difficult you'll end up crying. I've been there. Why not try this? If the floor isn't badly stained, try lightly scuffing the floor with 180-grit aluminum oxide (not garnet) paper. Then, wipe a Minwax stain over the entire floor to remove the scuffs and scratches. Mop on one coat of polyurethane and let dry thoroughly. I think you'll be pleased!
You have to be a realist. It would take ten years and a thousand quids worth of sandpaper. No es possible
hand sanding a wooden floor is almost impossible. you need to start with a 16 or 24 grit to remove old finishes and you could bearely move them by hand with enough pressure to do any good. if you started with a 60 (what is marked coarse) it would take forever and the sandpaper isn't cheap in the quantity you would need a lot. go to a rental place or home store and rent a sanding machine for 1/2 a day and discuss with them the best products to use.
