Repairing a small tear in drywall?
Question:When I was removing the base boards in my living room I accidentally tore some of the paper on the drywall. It is about a 5 inch tear that is still hanging on. What is the best way to go about repairing this tear? Can I use joint compound and glue the paper back down then prime and paint? Or what is the best and easiest way to go about this?
Answers:
using joint compound will make the tear bubble, need to use a sealer that you can get from any hardware store torn seetrock first and apply to the paper underneath, then use sheet rock mud and reattach.then skim coat over
You can use joint compound and press it back in place and then when it drys sand off the residual and then paint over again and it will look like new.
Stick it back with a thin coat of mud and go ahead and finish it. The primer and texter should cover any signs of the tear.
Cut off the torn paper and make sure the line where you cut, and the tear, are clean and the remaining paper is sound. Then patch with joint compound and sand until smooth.
Sounds like you may have ripped the tape where 2 pieces of sheetrock join. If so, you need to replace it with another piece of tape and mud (joint compound). Tear off piece, with puddy knife, put a coat of mud over tear, mud as wide as tape. Place tape over mud and with knife run it down tape to remove most of mud. Let dry a day. Place mud over tape smooth as possible using knife to feather edges of mud so no ridges are left. Not too thick, just enough to cover tape. Let dry a day. Thin mud with small amount of water to consistency of pancake batter, place another coat, covering edges of last coat. With knife, remove all but thin coat, feathering edges. Let dry a day. Sand with med. to fine. paper. Remove dust and paint. Good luck with your project.
