2x4 door, 2x6 walls?
Question:Can I install a door designed for 2x4 walls in a 2x6 wall by changing the sill
Answers:
Since this door has a sill, I would assume it is an entry door.
If it is an outswing door, you do not really need to do anything to the sill. Put the jamb extensions on the inside and bring your flooring to the sill or put in a trim strip.
An inswing door is a bit more difficult. Your hinge knuckles need to pass the interior wall for the door to open correctly, so your extensions need to go on the outside. If you have molding on the outside, it will need to be removed and replaced after the extensions are installed.
I know, that wasn't the question. Just thought it was worth clarifying.
Once you have the exterior frame extended, the sill will not go all the way to the outside. Most modern sills are made to accept a 2" sill extension. There should be a groove in the exterior nose of the sill.
You should be able to purchase the sill extension at the same place you bought the door. The extensions are specific to each brand of sill, so you can't just go to any store and get one. Also, the sills usually are not marked, and different door shops use different brands of sills with the same brand of doors. For example, two different shops may use Masonite doors but use different manufacturers for their sills.
The sill extension must be installed before the door is set. I have seen sills that require the sill to be removed to install the extension, but I think most are made so you can do it with the sill on the frame now.
If your sill does not have an acceptor for the extension, you will need to change the sill. This can be a problem, because the notches at the bottom of the frame are not standardized. At the very least you may need to rework the frame if you have to replace the whole sill.
If it's a pre-hung door you'd need to change the whole jam.
your life would be easier if you just got the correct door. even with proper tools, the extensions will show, not the best thing if it's the front door. it depends on what your time is worth, and how long it takes to do the job right. but, with that in mind, it can be done if it has to. good luck.
You sure can !!
