Yard is half dead with dead grass and weeds. What to do first..?
Question:I'm still learning to take care of my yard. I didn't do anything last season with it and I'm paying for it. The yard has a lot of dead grass and dandelions growing around the dead grass.
What basic approach should I take. Rake the dead spots out, Kill the weeds, then fertilize and plant more grass? Or plant and fertilize and kill the weeds after.
Others have told me I should have done stuff in the fall, but its ugly enough that I don't want to wait the whole summer to attack it.
Answers:
dethatch, spray to kill weeds, rake to loosen the dirt, put starter fertilizer on, reseed, keep watered...its going to be a few years to get a good lawn back, sorry to say.
I think you should airiate the lawn first, put down some weed and feed, wait about a month and then seed bare spots, your ferterlizer in the weed and feed may get some of your grass going, be patient

honestly check with a lawn company like Scotts or Greenskeeper. I used to do everything in the yard myself. This company comes 6 times a year and it averages out just as cheap as doing it yourself. By the time you buy fertizer, weed killer etc. And these companies use stronger chemicals. I did this in my yard and in one year I have a complete growth of bermuda grass over the entire yard. If you have any good grass- with proper care it will spread and cover the entire yard without re-seeding or soding the yard.
cut the grass rake the dead areas and throw some seeds down and they should pick up
