Need help! Anyone have tips on moving? (as in moving residences)?
Question:I'm just having trouble packing/getting motivated/staying on task. Can anyone outline the steps to moving (as in moving homes) for me, in a simple, organized way? (Preferably in the order that you'd do them...)
Or any tips for packing/organizing and moving?
Thank you so much!

Please allow me to share some of the more inexpensive lessons that life has taught me.
1-start packing as soon as possible. Time equals organization.
2-Number every box and on a note pad keep an inventory of the more important things in the box. It is almost impossible to keep track of all the little stuff but knowing where the important things are can allow for more organized and relaxed unpacking as well.
3-Liquor stores have the ultimate boxes for glasses, candles and bottles. Tell the manager at your local liquor store that you need boxes and give them your number. Be ready to run up there when they restock. Sometimes several liquor stores are needed if you have a lot of tall narrow breakables.
4-Dollar general and Family dollar have uniform sized re-useable boxes that they are supposed to return to their warehouse but sometimes they dont want to go through the trouble and they end up in the dumpster. Find out when your local one of these gets their truck and be there that night to collect the boxes. Uniform sized boxes stack better and are generally better for the move.
5-Pace yourself and possibly talk a friend or two into helping out. If you have the time try to do one room first and then use that room to stack everything as you progress onward. A little wine helps but never,NEVER pack while drunk. I lost a cat that way once...I think. Just kidding but stay sober and focus.
6-Try to keep the boxes under 25 pounds. Many people try to pack all the books or magazines together only to find out that it is too exhausting to move the boxes. Put the heavy stuff on the bottom of the box and use lighter stuff as filler.
7-Sacrifice a few boxes as dividers and box bottoms. Even though you tape the bottom of a box, an additional sheet of cardboard on the bottom can keep a taped seam from failing and save a lot of hassle.
Use common sense when ever you can and get help as much as possible.
Good luck!
U Haul on their web site has some good ideas.
You can pack and move it yourself, which might be cheaper. On the other hand, you can get professional movers to help you move. In this case it can be a bit costly, but you don't have to worry about loading/unloading and the move expenses are tax deductible.
Well, all the boxes are labeled by rooms. bathroom, kitchen, bedroom # 1 , etc. It makes it easier for the movers to unload boxes in the right rooms. Also, pack your luggage with items you will need for the first two days... towels, toothbrushes, clean underwear, clothes, night clothes, etc. That way you won't have to look through the boxes when you are so tired and just want to clean up and go to bed. Make certain you have lightbulbs for the new place. many people take them with them when they leave. I also put nightlights out. If kids wake in a new place in the night, it helps them get their bearing.
never jump from room to room packing. label everybox. keep everything in average sized boxes. books in small boxes. glass wrapped in that bubble stuff or peanuts (the kind that come in packges when you order something). book your movers in advance.keep all important papers with you at all times. like on the day of your move don't put them in the miving truck take them in your car.
When we moved I did all the packing myself, start in one room and work you way trough, put the items that you are not using at the moment in boxes and write on the box what is inside and where do they belong like kitchen etc... if you have things that you no longer use or need put them in boxes or bags marked with donation, clean the room all the way ,this way you wont need to go back later on since you will be too tired to clean .Pile the boxes into a corner just in case that you might need something you will know where to find it .I hope that I was of some help to you ,believe me it worked for me ! Best wishes!
