What can I use as a top coat for a painted nightstand?

Question:I sanded, primed, and painted (latex semi gloss) a nightstand with 2 coats, but now every time I put something on the top of the nightstand, it sticks to it. I don't want to ruin my paint job. What can I use as a top coat?

Answers:
Latex paint will dry to the touch in a matter of a few hours, but continues to cure and develop strength over a few weeks. It will get quite a bit stronger, but you will probably still want to coat it.

Waterborne polyurethane is your best bet. Dries fast, goes on clear and stays clear. A gloss is slightly more durable than satin or semi-gloss, but I would think either would be fine for a table. Two or three thin coats and let it set a couple of days before you put anything on it.

Buy a piece of glass at a home center or glass store and set in on top. Looks better and is tougher than anything else you would do and will not cost much .
Coat it with a water based polyurethane. Do several coats, letting each one dry fully before applying next coat.
