I just replaced the flapper on my toilet & now have to hold handle down to flush, What did I do wrong?
Question:I had a leaking toilet tank so I put in a new flapper. No matter what I do to the chain, I haven't been able to get it to flush with out holding down the handle...Any ideas?
Answers:
Check that the shortened chain is at the shortest possible link. Some of the older flappers have an air pocket inside the top of the flapper. This caused the flapper to float momentarily before it settled at the end of the flush. Depending on the one you bought, it may not have an air pocket. On most newer models of toilet you have to hold the handle for a moment for the flush to complete. Good luck!
I don't know, but whatever it is, I did it too! I'm putting your question on my watch list, so maybe both of us can find out!
Edit - I also tried shortening the chain, as many people suggested, and that doesn't do it at all. It's not like it's a huge thing - I maybe have to stand there 10-12 seconds to allow the toilet to flush - but my other toilet flushes by simply pushing the handle down until the flapper lifts and the water starts to flow out, and then I can walk away and it finishes on its own.
aren't you supposed to hold down the handle to flush? maybe i'm just confused by the question. i would go to a Home Depot or somewhere, and ask.
shorten the chain by clipping the clip to a link much further up the chain.
By shortening, this will take up the slack and allow you to flush it properly.
Turn water off at tank first, then flush. This will allow you a dry working area.
It's an adjustment issue but there could be several causes. The chain might be too long for one thing.
Shorten the chain! You want it loose enough that the valve doesn't leak yet tight enough so that you can just "give 'er a flip"! Good luck! ;-)=
I would try just the opposite to lengthen chain & raise water level in the toilet - perhaps the water level is too low
Pull the chain tight to where it lifts the flapper then back it down just a little.
Too tight & the flapper will not seal & water will run - not tight enough & you have to hold the handle down.
i once had this problem too, so i opened the cover while flushing, the problem is on the flapper, the nipple like rubber on the bottom is a little bit longer than the original, so i went to buy another brand, a little more expensive and it worked.
shorten the chain
