I haven't done it myself, but I've seen it done numerous times on do it yourself shows and in home decorating magazines and they look great. You have to wash the paneling first with a good cleaner, they recommend tri sodium phosphate (TSP), use a good primer and latex paint. I've been trying to get my sister to do it in her home.
I would really think it would depend on the quality of the paneling. I just purchased a house that had the basement finished in paneling. The laundry room's paneling had been painted over... I honestly didn't even realize it was painted over paneling until my husband pointed it out. However, there is also paneling in our bathroom that is NOT in good shape- it is falling apart and must be removed before painting. If the paneling is in good shape, I would definitely try painting it. Just use some good primer if it's dark paneling. What do you really have to lose except maybe $50 for primer and paint?
First you should clean the paneling and use a really good primer, like kilz, before painting. I did it and it turned out great.
I have! 1st you have to get "Kilz" & paint over it then use your regular paint. Works fine.
I painted over the real dark paneling and it look great, I have also wallpapered over paneling you have to tape the cracks in the panel before you apply the wallpaper.
I've seen it done and although it's tedious because of the cracks most of the time it comes out remarkably well and a definite improvement in most cases. There is a product that's available that you glue over paneling to cover the cracks if you want to put wall paper over up instead.
