Windows: Improving energy efficiency: How much of an impact, if any, does replacing windows have on bills?
Question:With existing wood framed, double hung windows and storms, and then vinyl siding (the windows may be from the 1960s) what if any impact would replacing them have on energy bills? I'm mainly interested in the heating and cooling of the home. There is extreme difference in temperatures between stories.
Answers:
alot, if the windows are that old, chances are that they are "leaky" meaning that the vacuum between the two panes of glass is probably not there anymore thus causing your house to be less insulated.
It would be wise to replace the windows now because they are 47 yrs old, and when you do replace them, please be sure to get Thermo-pane windows -- they help insulate the house more than 10 times a normal glass window, and also save energy (which means less energy bills). They also add house value if you wanna resell the house.
If the windows are that old it should make a fair impact. The old windows probably are leaky and may only be single pane. The new double pane LoE windows will insulate and protect against UV damage. Go to Lowe's or Home Depot and you can get windows replaced at a very reasonable price.
Has a big impact. Cuts down on air loss through the old glass and frames. The efficiency is great for both heating and cooling bills. I had mine replaced 4 years ago and am very happy with the results.
If you file a tax return, you might check into the energy tax credit for replacing your windows to approved energy efficient ones. Save your receipts.
From your secription, I would say it should be a significant change. Good luck.
