Particle Board?
Question:I have some particle board furniture (horrible stuff), and I want to re-paint them from white to a Glossy Black. I've hard it's better to just get new furniture rather than try to paint particle board. What do you think?? Is it a good or bad idea? If it's good, what do I use and how do I do it?
Answers:
When I redid my partical board furniture I roughed up the surface with 80 grit sandpaper and then used aircraft primer (oil based primer), and let that dry. After that I sanded it smooth, and then used spray on thinned down oil base paint in thin coats. I did three coats and I got a very smooth good looking finish.
You can do it, or cover it with the sticky shelf paper. I did the inside of a foot locker with blue marble. Turned out great!
Make sure you use a thick primer and then a heavy spray paint. You should probably even take it to a sandblast company and get them to paint it for like 30.00 bucks. I had a metal fire department chair painted from that nasty brown to a white and painted snoopy on it for my sons room.
As much as I love do it yourself stuff I would say pay to have it painted. If you haven't painted before you could make it run or have it uneven. It would be more of a headache then anything.
Use an alkyd base primer tinted to gray, then top coat with whatever glossy black that you want. Brush and roll, unless you have a sprayer. This "piece" is what it is. Don't waste a whole lot of time.
