How do I paint wood floors white?

Question:I am moving into a great apartment with a lot of character. It has hardwood floors (don't picture beautiful wood) that has been painting an ugly brownish/purple. Yeah, I know... I don't have a lot of $ to spend and would love to make them white or like a whitewashed look. Do NOT want to sand... someone I know suggested Kilz... any suggestions for a neat / easy / cheap look. I know, asking a lot.

Answers:
prime them 1st with white primer, then paint they should be varnished after that, but if this is getting too expensive, use and oil based paint.

You will have to sand somewhat to give the oil based primer you will be applying something to grip. You also have to insure the floor is clean from any grease and other dirt. So some sanding is in. An electric random orbital makes it easier.
Then apply 2 coats of enamel,(oil base) doing a light hand sand in between coats with 150 grit to get rid of the stickies your roller will leave.
There. Beautiful job!
You need to use an undercoat to cover any old paint. Kilz is a very good choice. It is a primer and covers old paint well. There is an enamel and a water based type. Either one is okay. Paint the base coat (primer), one coat may be enough. and then paint the color that you want, You might want the finish coat to be an enamel, enamels have a smoother finish, and will probably last longer. Enamels can be oil based (which is more expensive) or a latex enamel (a less costly, water based paint).
Good luck.
