I was wondering what is the price range of hiring an interior designer?

Question:I was wondering if anyone has hired an interior designer in the past or is an interior designer and can give me an idea of the prices. I am just looking for rough estimates. thanks in advance!

Answers:
It depends on the project, really.

My parents spent over $2K on their house, but then again it was a large house.

If you want to save money, find a college nearby that has an interior design program. Sometimes you'll be able to talk to the profs into letting some of the students work for you.

interior designers can range in price depending on experience, clientele, the size of the project, etc. They can be as reasonable as $500 and as expensive as ... well ... they can be expensive. But if you're on a budget, I would suggest checking out some local schools' interior design programs - those students are eager to unleash their creativity and you're helping them by giving them somewhere to practice. Hope things work out for you.
My parents paid around 11K for theirs, but that was on a 6 bedroom 5 bathroom house with office, family, living, dining, recreation rooms, pantry, and kitchen with breakfast nook. She also worked with the landscaper and architect while the house was being built. I would assume the run of the mill come in and redecorate would be a lot less expensive.

Another resource can be local community colleges and highschools. If they offer a design class get with the teachers to see if they would be willing to offer a "hands on" assignment where students present a design to you, and you offer to pay the students some reasonable fee for the "winning" ideas. When I did highschool drafting I got 1000$ for my floorplan of a house. Much less expensive than a regular architect and getting to see my design built was almost more of a reward than the money it'self.
I have heard that you can give the designer a budget and they will do the space for that amount. The way they get paid is the difference between the professional discount they get on the furnishings and the amount you are willing to pay. Another words if you give them a $20,000 budget and they save you $5000 through discounts. They keep the $5K and that's their fee.
what about an interior design student? they can't charge alot cuz they're just starting out
Are you talking about an interior designer or an interior decorator? My guess is the latter - unless you have a rather large budget. In any case, most of the transformation shows you see on tv are interior decorating, not interior design.

Prices will definitely depend where you live. In NYC, even a good interior decorator may set you back a couple thou, even if you have a small space. On the other hand, if you live in Blue Blanket, MS, if you can find an interior decorator, it would more likely cost a few hundred or so.

So, depending on what you're looking for, there are a couple ways to look. If you want a bona fide interior designer, you can look at the American Society of Interior Designers referral site http://www.asid.org/find/designer+referr... For cheap, the previous advice on institutions of higher learning or even high schools (if you have one who specializes in this kind of thing) is good. Another possible source (and one of my favorites) is Craigslist (creative services). In the Seattle area, where I live, a new business was advertising $20 or $40 an hour rates because they would then photograph your space to put as an example on their website. Cheaper still is if you get a bunch of design magazines (or go to your library, especially if it's a sizable city) - or order furniture or home decorating catalogs - and look for what inspires you. Involve friends or relatives who know your tastes. Many magazines then have where to buy information. [Although you can luck out when an interior decorator offers services for free in exchange for the photographs.]

Depending on how the fee is given, after the consultation, you may still have to purchase whatever is recommended and, if that is paint or flooring or what have you, do it yourself or hire someone else to!

Another individual mentioned another fee structure which includes purchase of items. Usually, though, this is done when the budget is fairly large.
