We have 2 fireplaces can they be removed.?
Question:any construction people out there. we have fireplace downstairs, and one up . the flue for the one down runs along side the one up. upstairs between the 2 it takes up an area about 9 foot long and 3 foot deep, my husband says if its possible to ,he will remove both of them to make the room open and make my kitchen bigger and have a better flow . they extend thru the roof about 6-7 feet. my husband is very good , and has remodeld every room in our home, but this is a big one. do I need a structural Engineer to look at this .or just a contractor. thanks
Answers:
It depends on whether they are sharing any of the weight load for the 2nd floor and the roof. Or of they are braced in with the same joists etc that are bearing weight. This is unlikely and uncommon but it does happen.
Chiseling out the actual fireplace is no big deal.
Remove the chimney stack to below the roof line.
Then you rebuild the roof to cover the opening and remove the chimney from the side exterior of your home, frame and shingle to match.
if you are extending the area then yeah, but you could just close them up
