I would, simply because of condensation on the glass that would drip down and possibly puddle onto the floor. Also, there would be condensation on the underside of the glass table and that could drip onto whatever is below.
If you want to keep your glass looking nice and clean. I have a glass coffee table and hate it because I get lazy and put the glasses on there... makes an icky ring!

yes certainly if u want to protect it for a long time to come. it is the movement of the material which is used on surface leave scratches invisible to eye for certain period of time. but after some time area of glass which was used frequently starts getting fogy
