Ikea
Ikea is the only way to go :)
This may sound dumb, but eBay can 't be beat! I recently bought a dining set with 8 chairs. Including shipping, it was still less than the furniture store and is top quality. I also bought a new bathroom vanity with a glass vessel sink for hundreds less than any store was selling the same thing for, so don't be afraid to give it a try. Check the feedback first, and if it's good, you shouldn't have to worry about it.
Look at West Elm as well as CB2 (both have on line catalogs) and great sales.
Pier 1- they have some pricier pieces too, but they have EXCELLENT sales!
Oh yeah, & depending on your location theres a store called Homegoods that has awesome pieces, some one of a kind. Its from the same main company as TJmaxx & Marshalls:

Ikea is great. Depending on the item, Target may suit your needs and this summer they seem to be doing a lot of free shipping with furniture purchases. Pier 1's quality varies on the item too. World Market has great stuff but it is not probably considered contemporary. If you do find a store that you like, every store has sales, so what might not have been in the 'student budget' category at full-price might be on sale and as summer wears on, sales will increase because students go back to school and stores like it when they buy things. Oh, I almost forgot TJ Maxx has a home store called Home Goods. The contents vary in style, but prices are usually quite reasonable. The last time that I checked, however, you could not purchase items online. Good luck!
