Does anyone know the going rate for a painter/decorator?

Question:Hi,

I have an average size 3 bedroom semi.
2 living rooms, hallway/landing, 3 bedrooms have all been wallpapered, but I just need a painter to paint over the wallpaper magnolia. Most rooms are already, white or yellow.
How much roughly is the going rate?

Answers:
Hi Sophia, prices vary, and also can depend on what area you live.
I am a female P/D, and sometimes I look at other sites and read what the other P/D are charging, and I am quite suprised, as some say they wont get out of bed for less than £130 a day.
I think you have to work on the assumption that they can charge anything from £85-£130 per day.
Is it just the walls?, do you want the woodwork done or the ceilings as well?
What type of wallpaper is already up?, if its a vinyl paper, then you normally cant paint straight over that without incurring proplems, not all the time, but the majority of times, so you might need to apply a diluted PVA before you actually paint on top of the vinyl.
Just of the top of my head without seeing the job, and if its straightforward painting just on the walls, then you will need at least 2 coats, then there is the sheeting up etc.
But your looking at approx 5-6 days work, like I said its off the top of my head, but I wouldnt think anymore than 5-6 days.
So if you work that out at the average of say £100 per day, then at least you get an idea, if there is ceilings and woodwork involved, obviously it will take a bit longer.

£100 per day, so maybe £200, you must ask them.
I paid £150 for a room 27ft. by 12
Ask the local window cleaner, he has nothing to do on rainy days
Most contractors vary in their pricing. I charge $125 per room. Although i wouldn't paint over the wallpaper as this will cause problems later. the wallpaper when it gets wet will start peeling off the walls and then you've lost everything you've done.
The charge varies, according to the area. not only that. but decorators in each area operate different price levels. To further complicate the matter, self employed decorators may charge less than decorating firms. Alas the answer is that there is not a straightforward answer, as prices can wildly vary from £80- £200, approx for a days labour, plus materials.
The only sensible way is to look through a local paper, and contact decorator who state, " Free Estimates ". Get 2/3 estimates { Written Ones }. Make certain they state how many coats of paint they will apply, ask for references. ask for an estimate for the job, not by the day, or the hour. Finally weigh things up, and make up your own mind.
