Can you paint old (60's) linoleum tile? What kind of paint should you use? Any special prep necessary?

Question:

Answers:
No.
True linoleoum is a mixture of LINseed oil and petrOLEUM.
Both products will not accept a paint. OK, maybe they will accept the non slip paint used in Factory / Workshop floors, but that's not a paint it's a shiny scrim :-)
Proper lino is very expensive to buy, you could try and restore it with a very thin coat of linseed oil. It will bring the colours back a lot.
If it's too far gone, rip it up and start afresh. Be careful ripping it up as it breaks and the edges take your skin off.

just lay new tile over it. get some floor leveling compound put it down then lay new vinyl. works great and is cheaper than painting.last longer too.
Not only can you not paint it, but you may be unable to get it off the floor before putting down new flooring.
Been there, done that.

It's much easier to prepare the existing linoleum for a new layer, then put new flooring down over the old.
