I need to replace our gabel end gingerbreading on the north side of our house. What type of wood should I use?

Question:What kind of primer and paint should I use?

Answers:
Originally it was made from pine, you will have to know the width of it as in 1 x 8 etc. #2 grade or better. After cutting it out use a good primer sealer let dry for a day then paint with outdoor latex.

Pengy is right if you want to make your own, but Lowes and Home Depot and others sell vinyl gingerbread. It never rots and never needs to be painted.
