Hi
As we know bamboo is a fast growing plant in the world, bamboo floor now in the world almost all comes from one species, called "Moso", its scientific name is Phyllostachys pubescens which mainly distributes in south of China (south of Yangtse river), its desity is about 0.66, compares with maple (0.75), white ash (0.67) and oak (0.59~0.93), we know it's a quite good material, it has similar property (such as hardness etc..) as these woods when it is used for flooring.
There are three patterns of bamboo floor appearing on the surface, horizontal, vertical and strand woven, and two basic color, natural and carbonized (cafe).
Compare pattern different, except surface appearance, there are some different characteristic, the hardness of horizontal surface is better than vertical's, and vertical floor plank is more stable than horizontal (you will easily find one by checking the beeline of floor plank, almost all horizontal pieces have a little bit bend, but vertical are all keep straight), moreover vertical has less shrinkage or expansion in width of floor plank than horizontal, so, for the place of moisture change big, it's better to take vertical.
Strand woven is made by high pressure, in this case bamboo material is got certain compression, so the desity of it is about 1.2, which can compare its property with any wood! It's a very good material.
Due to cafe color is made by high temperature, the fibers of bamboo get certain damage, so the surface hardness and strength of natural is better than cafe.
It's a great product. It's hard and durable, comes in many shades like other hardwoods and the greenies love it because it's renewable and because it's a grass, it re-grows quickly and of course isn't contributing to the worries of deforestation.
I have it and love it-- it's stood up to kids, dogs, dirt and more.
