Decorating - how to paint wood?

Question:i have a wooden fixture that has been painted with a glossy paint, but now quite a lot of it has chipped away. can anyone advise what the best way of stripping it down and re-painting is?

Answers:
Remove all loose paint, then sand the fixture down with a medium grade sandpaper, making sure that the edges of the flaked areas are not proud of the surface. Paint with a good undercoat, and then gloss.

sand it down with sandpaper or a sanding machine then paint with emulsion (white.cheap) thats it ready for the colour you want
You have a few options. Remember if the fixture is antique, then talk with someone who knows about antique restoration. You can ruin the value of an antique by stripping it or re-painting it.

You can use a paint stripper. The newer paint strippers have a better smell and changes color when it is ready to be scrapped off. I’m going to re-paint an old (not antique, nor will it ever be worthy being called an antique) dresser and that is the method I’m going to use.

You can sand it down. Smooth out all of the edges and remove all of the gloss from the old paint.

What ever you use to get rid of the old paint, you will then need to prime the wood and re-paint. Or if you strip off all of the paint, then sand it down really well and stain it.

If it is an electric fixture, take the time to re-wire it while you have it down.
you can use paint stripper which is very messy or sand away the chips till smooth then prime and paint
If it is easy to strip then use a sander or a piece of sand paper, rub the paint down until you cant see the chip , then under coat and top coat, if it is fiddly to get at and cant be sanded use a gel stripper, clean then re-paint.
