Girls, can you help me design a cool room for my 12 year old daughter?

Question:My daughter wants a purple room. We have talked about it a little, and I know she doesn't want lavendar - she wants a darker purple on the walls. She can paint the ceiling, BUT the room has woodwork on the trim and the doors that must stay. It is walnut in color (deep golden wood). Her furniture can be painted any color and I am willing to buy her new accessories for the room (pictures, beads, lights, bedding, etc) within reason.

I'll be talking to her to make the final decision, but I wanted to get some input from Y!A users! :)

Please give me some ideas and if you have links or pictures, please list them!! :)

It is HER room, and so all the advice you need should come from her. Unless she is wrecking the house, she should be in charge. You have the rest of the house to decide on. let her have this room as truly hers.
If she likes dark purple, yellow moons, fairies and that fun stuff usually appeal to girls.
lots of colors!and accessories.it would be cute to have a spot in the room where she and her friends can sit and hangout, like one of the corners of her room with a bunch of fun pillows, and a table. =)
go to home depot and they'll give you some great ideas!
here are some tips!

I suggest...no HIGHLY suggest looking in Potterybarn teen! If that is to expensive then try like target.very cute things in there! By the way boy stores have a variety of things so if she likes dark or light colors there are many choices!
I use PBTEEN AND TARGET!
Wow, that sounds beautiful.

Go with a deep plum purple and then use silver accents. You need to pick something that is going to last into her teen years so that she doesn't get sick of it right away. You could also mix a deep purple WITH a lighter shade of purple in addition to the silver accents.

One thing that will make her room look a little bigger---paint the ceiling a shade or two lighter than the walls.

Good luck!
I re-did my 11 year old daughter's room and used this pattern which has purple in it.

The walls of her room are painted "Heather" by Behr - it is not lavendar, it is a brighter lighter purple.

Just some ideas. Good luck.
What decor does she like? Hobby Lobby (or any good craft store) has some very cute Butterfly items that can be put on the wall or hang. They have all different colors. My daughter does purple, too. She has a fur like bedspread with matching pillow shams. She coordinates these with an orange fur pillow sham on a decorative pillow and a hot pink one, too. How about a small rug to match?
I say let her go with the deep purple, then maybe paint her furniture a bright yellow and get her real bright colorful bedding!

Maybe hang a ceiling fan with different colored blades.

Sounds like fun to me! I am 37 and might want this in my room (don't think my husband would approve though, ha ha).

Best bet, have fun and let her choose. You can always repaint.
Posters and pictures on the wall of anything she loves will help and a cute bed spread will help alot also but just make sure what ever you get her she is going to like for a year or two i mean because once she gets in her teen years she might grow out of all that stuff. Also a store called ikea is a great place to shop for all of that stuff.

Hoped i helped
well I would think that the wood trim would not matter that would look kinda cool..at Wall-mart they have these bed spreads that are in the price zone and they are sinlk and come in many colors! I would also think that if you wont to paint the ceiling lighter and the walls darker that would look cool...good luck

4 the walls you can take her 2 favorite colors and take the darker color and completely cover the walls then buy a holy sponge (with little holes in it) and take the lighter color and the sponge and dab it over the darker color but don't completely cover the darker color trust me it looks awesome maybe you should try it on cardboard first to make sure she likes it
GOOD LUCK I hope I helped
Well im 12 years old and i would get something for her that is hip, retro, && stylish. For example, polka dots or stripes that are in different shades of purple would be hip and retro and stylish. Or you can go with a flower pattern. If she has a walking closet then beads in the door would be cute. Also get her like some cute curtains to match with her bedsead. But the celing would defantly have to stay lighter then the walls. Just ask your daughter what kind of pattern she would like and start from there then you can decorate form there but just dont over do it. And pictures in the room like on the wall i would not over do that and lights would be hip and retro!
deep gold should go great w/ dark purple try asking her what kind of stuff she likes. say she likes horses u could put silver or brown sparkly horse stickers on the walls or if she like crafts paint a table purple and make a craft station in a corner of her room
take it from a girl that is 12
if any questions just e-mail me at rmvf@sbcglobal.net
Go with a purple monochromatic look... it's very pleasing to the eye, esp. if she likes the color purple. Basically, choose 3 purple colors (I"ll suggest Behr's Mystical Purple, Brook Trout, and Fabulous Grape) From the base of the wall, paint 1/3 of the wall with the darkest purple, the rest of the 2/3 with the med. purple, and the ceiling with the lightest purple. It looks really great!
When I was that age, I always wanted a really cool, luxurious bed. Try getting one of those mesh veils that hang above the bed. You can get them in a few different colors at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I think white would look nice with dark purple walls. Also, think lots of pillows of all different sizes, shapes and styles. If you can sew, it's even better because your daughter can pick out the fabric she wants and add rhinestones, tassels - all that fun girly stuff. If not, you can get pillows at Wal-Mart, Pier 1, craft stores etc. They don't have to match perfectly - that's the fun of it.

Try Target, Delias.com or any craft store for cool room accessories.
I'm remodeling my room right now, as well :] Some good websites might be PB Teens or www.store.delias.com to get really nice furniture or room accessorizing ideas. You both could easily go to the nearest craft store and get cheap but really cool fabric and make your own throw pillows for the room, you could make a decoupage light switch and paint or glue on designs, you can make your own headboard with plywood and purple fabric, anything like that. A lot of cool ideas are on www.gurl.com one of the ones I liked best was:

"Find the center of the wall above your bed. This is where your calendar will be located. Place the double-sided mounting tape on the back of each CD case. Before removing the other side of the adhesive (the side that will go on the wall) place seven CD cases in a row (you might need a friend's help) above your bed to make sure it is even and centered on the wall. Once you're confident about the placement, remove the adhesive and stick the CD cases on your wall. Repeat this five times so that you have a total of five rows.

Cut out squares of copy paper that will fit neatly into the CD cases (it might help to trace around the CD case on the paper, before cutting). Write out the numbers 1-31 on each square using a thick magic marker or stencils with spray paint. Insert the squares into the cases making sure the right numbers match up for the current month. You can then fill the blank cases with extra paper or photos or leave them blank to achieve a more minimalist look. To change the calendar each month, just open up the jewel case and switch around the numbers."

Either way, good luck with the room and I hope your daughter really enjoys it!
I have a little sister that age but she did her room in all cats like leopard or tiger or cheetah. she had painted cat paw prints all over her walls as if it had walked around everywhere. Also tons of pics of different kinds of exotic cats. Leopard print bedspread with giant stuffed cats. Well , that was her room. you said your daughter likes purple but not lavender a really cool idea is a deep dark plum looking purple if your only doing the ceiling. To add colors to the walls you can use purple picture frames or posters with lots of purple in them. Oh in the picture frames you would put things she likes like a picture of a purple flower , or maybe a pic of a purple perfume bottle like in magazines . Its a fun project that's inexpensive that you can do together. also you can just accent around the room all different shades of purple. Maybe a plum bedspread with lighter colored purple pillows on them . Also a purple lamp, rug, curtains, when you accent its good to maybe use two colors so it flows around the room. There are lots of neutral colors that go with purple. Black is a good one but not everyone likes it that dark. White is also good with purple but not plum. The option of silver is good too. If you use a varied amount of purple you wouldn't need two colors because that would make it flow around the room
good luck and have fun
design on a dime is a good show to watch
urban outfitters has some great decor!!
Wat abt the boys...we can't ans ur que...

Do watever ur Daughter like.even if she want ask her to paint her own room ... if she get happy for wat she want let her be, but don't forget to give ur helping hand,
Ok here is a suggestion, after all I have a son that wanted green room dark green room, wasnt happening. So how about a darker purple stripe with a light purple stripe and alternate it along the walls which it will still look good with the woodwork. Then you can accessorize with some cream and dark purple accessories. Also try a polka dot curtain made from material with dark purple and cream, ive seen this at joanne fabrics, wuld look cute she is 12 years old so yu dont want to go too girlish she will be a teen before you know it. Also you can try some throw pillows in different purples and maybe a quilt with purple in it, depending on her carpet you could try a dark purple throw rug, I know its HER room , but you dont want it too dark she will become depressed. Try a lamp with a cream shade and you can buy them little cottenball looking things at a fabric store and put around the top and bottom of the shade. Kind of keep the polka dot and stripe theme going, youll be surprised it will be brighter and cheery, just remember it is her room and youll want to add some brighter colors to even it off , you should talk to her work together on this it will give you some bonding time, any ? well u no.
i think you should paint the room the purple that she wants and paint the ceiling and the woodwork white. it looks really nice.

when i was younger my sister had a mural and i had like a painted tree and flowers coming up from all around the room. you could find people who do that in the phonebook. it might be pricy though.

also they have really cute comforters and ideas at www.wakeupfrankie.com
try ikea if there is one near/ nearish (or online) its really good for funky stuff thats origional and different from wot everyone else has. i dont think u should paint the ceiling i would have it white because the purple may get too much. you could have all the walls white and add purple accessories it would really change it it sounds plain but get enough purple and it would seem like the walls are purple.
i really think that its her room and you seem to be letting her do what she wants to with it but let her decide mostly what she wants. But just in case here are some ideas. If she decides to paint the ceiling then i think it should be a white or lavendar you don't want to feel like you are walking into a box when you go in the room. I would paint the trim and doors b/c dark purple i just dont' think thats goes good with that type of wood so i would paint the doors whatever color the ceiling ends up being. Furniture i think should be white or once again if she only wants purple maybe a lavendar..
If you're located in Northern California, I'd suggest using Design 101 in Saratoga.

Very helpful staff and everything you need is under one roof so you don't have to do a lot of running around.
to me it sounds as if you are a sexest only asking girls opinions, so maybe you should decorate the room in other sexest themes
hi, i just read your question and i would like to advise you that don't use the color dark purple, it may look nice but once you try it on the wall you won't like. i made the same mistake. i picked color purple for my room and it didn't came out as i expected. if your daughter like bright colors she should go with between yellow and orange, or turquoise, that's a nice color
Hi, I recently decorated with the color of pomagranet. It is a deep purple and very striking. I used a lighter purple and white bed spread with flowers and white sheer curtains for the windows. Ceiling remained a soft white. It was very elegant and a crowd pleaser as well. The girl was a drama queen, so it was appropriate and will transition into youung womanhood nicely. If you have wood floors remember to use a light colored rug to draw the eye up and down.
