How do I get the distressed look on my cabinets if they are already painted white?

Question:I think I read somewhere that a stain or varnish can be thinned down and brushed over the cabinets to create the antiqued look. I'm just trying to avoid stripping them down.

Answers:
You might try using a fine (220 grit or greater) sand paper and wearing down a few spots where normal aging would most often appear. More in some spots than others and not the same on each door. Pay attention to how you open and close the cabinets and where your hands come in contact with the wood. Those spots are your sanding spots, though some will be sanded less than others due to how often you reach for that spot. Don't forget behind the nobs, handles or pulls.
Then you can add your stain or varnish over the entire for a finished unified look.

Try rubbing them down with an antiquing wax .
there a re varnishes that crack the paint to give an aged look--you can also just use sandpaper but be sure not to overdo it
