Need help with slip covers?

Question:I have very old furniture in my living room and cannot afford new right now. Does anyone know if it would be cheaper to try to make some creative slip covers or to just buy pre-made ones? I can sew and am sort of creative, but just not sure where to start.

Answers:
I'm in the same situation you are. Bad sofa, no $$. I was using trendy throws and blankets to cover my sofa, but they're easily disturbed, and the couch tends to swallow them after a day or two. Then, I looked at slip-covers, but they are just as expensive as a decent used sofa. Why pay up to $100 bucks for a slip cover when that money can go towards the new leather couch that I want? So, I ended up buying a new mattress skirt at a thrift store for a few bucks. I spread it over the sofa and keep it in place with the little elastic bands with the metal jaws that are used for keeping sheet corners attached to a bed. A bag of these can be had for a buck at the dollar store. It's not beautiful, but it's comfy and at least presentable.
BIG LOTS is a good place to look also. Check the clearance racks. Neater stuff than walfart, and cheaper.

Many pattern companies make slip-cover patterns, but fabric isn't cheap these days.
Try closeout stores (Big Lots, Ross, TJ Maxx) to get brand names cheap.
Ebay has them too.
Walmart, Target and Dollar General also carry them fairly inexpensively.
