Should installing tile be left to professionals?
Question:My husband and I just bought our first home(yay!), and we can't decide whether to have tile put in professionally, or save money and attempt to install it ourselves. We are both pretty handy, is this beyond our capability?

I would give it a try! You can get lots of information about installing the tile from Home Depot, and many home redo shows have installs done, if you need more step by step instruction. The basic must do is, your first series/row must be level, if it's off, the entire project will be off. From there it could get real crazy like a mosaic, then only the edges have to line up. Have fun with it, and you'll really like how it turns out and can feel proud about your new skills. I think you may have spawned an idea for me......
Definitely get a professional. You may save some money at this time, but if you have a really competent tiler, you'll never have to worry about your surface again, and it may save you some of your hard-earned in the long run.
If you and your husband can do it then lay it yourselves and save money for something you can't do. you will be very proud so the job you both did.
Absolutely do it yourself. It's an amazing feeling when you see what you're capable of doing. If you're not sure how to do something, just ask where you buy the tile, or look it up on the internet, or find a book on laying tile. You can do it.
My wife installed the kitchen counter tiles and did the ones in two bathrooms, she also did all of the wood trim around them
Give it a try in a bathroom, they are smaller than kitchens, or even a hallway. See if you like it and better yet, see how well you work as a team. If you find the small area too much for you to do, hire a professional to do other, larger room(s). Good luck and have fun. Congrats on the new home.
